Microsoft Edge is getting a performance mode to improve RAM, CPU, and battery usage

Microsoft is putting a new performance mode in its Edge browser to see how it works. Any testers of the Microsoft Edge Canary version of the browser have access to the new mode, while others can activate it manually with a flag. “Performance mode optimizes performance, responsiveness, memory, CPU, and battery usage.”

" Microsoft claims. "Performance changes can differ based on the personal requirements and browsing habits.”

It's unclear how the output mode affects Edge, but it does have an impact on the Sleeping Tabs functionality. When you allow performance mode, the timeout for Sleeping Tabs is set to five minutes. When you have a lot of tabs open, Microsoft added sleeping tabs in Edge earlier this year, which allows the browser to instantly release device resources for unused tabs.

This improves the performance of new tabs and prevents the window from hogging memory and CPU power in the background.

Laptop users would undoubtedly benefit the most from Edge's performance mode, as browsers may have a significant effect on battery life.

Inside a continuing leadership shakeup, GameStop's CEO will step down.

Inside a continuing leadership shakeup, GameStop's CEO will step down.

With the announcement of CEO George Sherman's retirement at the end of July, GameStop's top management begins to change.

Before the opening bell on Monday, the company's stock had risen by more than 8%.

Chewy founder Ryan Cohen, a major investor in the floundering video game retailer, was appointed chairman of the board of the Grapevine, Texas-based business less than two weeks ago.

Cohen has been amassing large shares in the business and promoting a digital revolution. As more players migrate to downloadable downloads rather than the discs that GameStop stocks on its shelves, the retailer has struggled.

Cohen was replaced on the commission by two of his previous colleagues.

Their arrival coincided with GameStop's stock's meteoric January rise, in a strange market phenomenon that pitted small investors who banded together online against big, institutional investors who had been shorting the stock, betting it would sink below the $20 price threshold in January.

The GameStop stock saga may be over, but its effect on Wall Street is far from over.

During a congressional hearing, the CEO of Robinhood admitted that the company made "mistakes" during the GameStop trading frenzy.

Gamestop Corp.'s stock is now worth around $170, up 720 percent this year. The shares

In a regulatory filing last month, GameStop said it had recruited an executive headhunter to determine company leadership and that its board of directors had spoken to potential applicants from the gaming, e-commerce, and technology sectors.

GameStop announced earlier this month that it will sell up to 3.5 million shares. The shares will be sold in a "at-the-market" auction, which enables businesses to sell their stock on the open market for a set period of time.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple's XRP, and Cardano are all in danger of being wiped out in a massive $300 billion price crash.

Early Sunday morning, bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency sector, like ethereum, Ripple's XRP, and cardano, were hit by a sudden flash crash, sending prices plummeting (though Elon Musk's "favorite" crypto dogecoin is keeping steady).

The bitcoin price, which had been trending downwards toward $60,000 per bitcoin earlier this week, has fallen more than 10% to just over $50,000. The bitcoin price has since recovered to about $55,000, but it is still a long way from its recent highs around $65,000.

Bitcoin bull and Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz cautioned of a "washout" ahead ahead of the cryptocurrency flash crash, which wiped $300 billion from the combined bitcoin, ethereum, XRP, cardano, and wider $2 trillion crypto sector.

Coming soon: Android 7.1 Developer Preview

Today, we’re taking the wraps off of Android 7.1 Nougat, the latest version of the platform. You probably saw a sneak peek of it at last week’s event. It’s an incremental update based on Android 7.0 but includes new features for consumers and developers — from platformDaydream VR support and A/B system updatesto app shortcuts and image keyboard support.
We’ve already been working closely with device makers to get them ready for Android 7.1, and next we’ll give you access to this update so you can start getting your apps ready.
Later this month we’ll be bringing you the Android 7.1 platform as an open Developer Preview, similar to what we did for Android 7.0. You’ll be able to test and build on the new platform and try the latest features.
As always, we’ll deliver the Developer Preview through the Android Beta program, which makes it incredibly easy to participate.

What’s in Android 7.1?

Android 7.1 delivers the productivity, security, and performance of Android 7.0, along with a variety of optimizations and bug fixes, features, and new APIs (API level 25).
For developers, Android 7.1 adds new capabilities to help you drive engagement in your app and deliver an improved user experience, such as:
  • App shortcuts API — lets you surface key actions directly in the launcher and take your users deep into your app instantly. You can create up to 5 shortcuts, either statically or dynamically.
  • Circular app icons support — lets you provide great-looking rounded icon resources that match the look of Pixel and other launchers.
  • Enhanced wallpaper metadata — lets you provide metadata about your wallpapers to any picker displaying the wallpapers as a preview. You can show existing metadata such as label, description, and author, as well as a new context URL and title to link to more information.
Android 7.1 also adds these much-requested developer features to the platform:
  • Image keyboard support — expands the types of content that users can enter from their keyboards, letting them express themselves through custom stickers, animated gifs, and more. Apps can tell the keyboard what types of content they accept, and keyboards can deliver all of the images and other content that they offer to the user. For broad compatibility, this API will also be available in the support library.
  • Storage manager Intent — lets an app take the user directly to a new Settings screen to clear unused files and free up storage space on the device.
For carriers and calling apps, the platform includes new APIs to support multi-endpoint calling and new telephony configuration options.
Image keyboard support on Nexus 6P
Image keyboard support: Let users input images and other content directly from a keyboard.

App shortcuts on Nexus 6P
App shortcuts: Use app shortcuts to surface key actions and take users deep into your app instantly.

Get your apps ready

Android 7.1 is an incremental release, but it’s always important to make sure your apps look and run great — especially as devices start to reach consumers.
The Android 7.1 Developer Preview will give you everything you need to test your apps or extend them with new features like shortcuts or keyboard images. Included are the SDK with new APIs, build tools, documentation and samples, as well as emulators and device system images for running your apps on supported Nexus devices. We’ll also include a launcher and apps that support app shortcuts, and a keyboard and apps that support keyboard images.
If you want to receive the Developer Preview automatically, visit Android Beta and enroll your device. If you previously enrolled a device and haven’t unenrolled, your device will receive the update. If you already enrolled but don’t want to receive the update, visit Android Beta to unenroll the device as soon as possible.
Initially, we’ll offer the Developer Preview for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C devices, extending to other supported devices by the end of the preview. At the final release of the Android 7.1.x platform, due in early December, we’ll roll out updates to the full lineup of supported devices — Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, 9, Player, Pixel C, and supported Android One devices — as well as Pixel and Pixel XL devices.

Coming to consumer devices soon

We’re working with our partners to bring Android 7.1 to devices in the ecosystem over the months ahead, so we recommend downloading the Android 7.1 Developer Preview as soon as it’s available. Test your apps for compatibility and optimize them to look their best, such as by providing circular app icons and adding app shortcuts.

Samsung ends Galaxy Note 7 production permanently

It’s final. Samsung is not doing a second round of recall but it’s ending production. We reported earlier that production and sales have been discontinued in South Korea. Even the exchange program has been halted globally already. This time, we’re hearing from Samsung once and for all that its ending production of the Galaxy Note 7 after the global recall. Despite the company’s attempt to make the batteries “safer”, more problems arose and more explosions were reported in different countries.

This hurts but Samsung is ending production. The Note 7 has been the cause of many problems lately so we’re guessing it is better for the company to just put an end to it. Sales and replacement programs were expected to resume in some key markets but plans have been changed. After a series of unfortunate events featuring the Galaxy Note 7, it’s wiser to just stop production.

Samsung said earlier:

“TAKING OUR CUSTOMER’S SAFETY AS OUR HIGHEST PRIORITY, WE HAVE DECIDED TO HALT SALES AND PRODUCTION OF THE GALAXY NOTE 7.”

We know safety is Samsung’s top priority so ending the production and sales is better. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urged the phone owners not to use the Note 7 anymore to avoid possible explosions.

Meanwhile in its native country, Korea Agency for Technology and Standards requested retailers to stop exchanging the unit. They were urged to stop selling altogether. It’s about time Samsung offers a more definite solution as shares have been going down lately. We’re talking about a market value of almost $17 billion .

the Pixel and Pixel XL

If you’ve formed an emotional attachment to the Nexus brand, it’s time to say goodbye. But this is good news – the legacy continues with the Pixel, a collaboration between Google and HTC, the same team that brought us both the original Android phone and the first Nexus.

Two phones – the Pixel and Pixel XL – cover the bases of size preference, 5″ and 5.5″ respectively. Both have AMOLED screens, with 1080p resolution for the small one (441ppi) and QHD for the big one (534ppi). Battery capacity is also different, 2,770mAh and 3,450mAh.
Beyond that, both Pixels are more similar than they are different. Qualcomm supplied a revamped chipset, the Snapdragon 821, Android 7.1 Nougat (yes, a point upgrade over what the LG V20 has) brings “sustained performance mode.”
The camera boasts the same excellent qualities we loved on the last (ever?) pair of Nexus devices – 12MP sensor, 1.55µm pixels, f/2.0 aperture. But it adds Electronic Image Stabilization, which Google demoed on stage and looked pretty impressive.
The Google Pixel and Pixel XL have the same storage options – 32GB (for those that use Google Photos and Play Music) and 128GB (for those that prefer their data offline). By the way both Pixel phones get unlimited Google Photos storage for photos at full resolution.
Both come with 4GB of RAM – one better than the Nexus 6P, nothing extraordinary though a clean Android OS runs leaner.
While HTC built the phones, the Pixels branded only with the Google logo. And they are loaded to the teeth with Google services that cover everything from messaging, through cloud services to AI assistants. The search giant has a growing stable of self-branded devices – the Google phone can connect to a Google router and cast to a Google media player, you get the idea.
The Pixel brand debuted with the best Chromebook money can buy, then ventured into Android with the Pixel C tablet, clearly, it’s a premium brand by Google. And the two phones are priced accordingly – they start $649 and will be available through a bunch of carriers and retailers. Check them out below. UK prices are £599/£699 for the 32GB/128GB Pixel and £719/£819 for the 32GB/128GB Pixel XL.
Pre-orders in the UK, US, Australia, Canada and Germany have already launched and in India will start on October 13, with actual sales beginning a week later, October 20. The phones will be available in Quite Black, Very Silver and Really Blue colors with the latter being a US exclusive.

Huawei will introduce the next flagship in November

Huawei’s next flagship device is coming on November 3. The Chinese giant sent out “save the date” emails to members of the press, pegging November 3 as the data of an “exclusive press conference” in Munich, Germany. The occasion is the “global unveiling of a new flagship device” and Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei, will be on stage to deliver the presentation.
Yu is known to have a penchant for presenting new Huawei devices at press events, and his presence is a sign that something major is coming. Most recently, the executive unveiled the new Nova and Nova Plus on stage during IFA 2016.
Huawei’s invitation is lacking in detail, but there’s a good chance that the mystery device coming on November 3 is the Mate 9. The date matches a recent rumor out of China that claimed Huawei would bring forward the release date of its hero device from December to November.
Last year, the Huawei Mate 8 was announced in late November in China and relaunched for A global audience at CES in January 2016. It’s likely the Mate 9 will follow the same pattern
Various leaks
suggest the Mate 9 will be an unabashed powerhouse. Specs will likely include the new Kirin 960 processor, up to 6GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage, a generous screen, a dual camera co-developed with Leica and a 4,000 mAh battery. Huawei may also rework its EMUI software, which wasn’t received very well outside of China.
What do you expect from the Mate 9? Let us know your thoughts!

YouTube Go is a new app for offline viewing and sharing

YouTube Go is a new app for offline viewing and sharing

Google has announced YouTube Go, a new app designed to broaden the accessibility of the behemoth video-sharing service. Designed and developed with Indian users in mind, who will be able to test the app first before a broader rollout, YouTube Go is intended to work more effectively in areas where connectivity is more limited.
YouTube Go allows users to save videos for offline viewing, giving options over quality and file size so it's clear how much data a download will use. The app also allows for local sharing with nearby users without using any data. YouTube Go builds upon the Smart Offline feature that YouTube launched first in India earlier this year.
"YouTube Go is a brand new app to help the next generation of users share and enjoy videos," YouTube product management VP Johanna Wright says in a statement. "YouTube Go was designed and built from the ground up with insights from India, in order to bring the power of video to mobile users in a way that is more conscious of their data and connectivity, while still being locally relevant and social."
YouTube Go was announced at a Google event in Delhi where the company revealed several new products aimed at the Indian market; many of these will later make it around the world. "In an increasingly mobile-first world, India gives us early insights into the future of the Internet," Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in an op-ed for The Economic Times today. "Moreover, we learned the issues Indians may have with connectivity and data constraints can be universal."

Google chrome get data saver

If you rely on Google’s browser app to surf the web, talk with friends or watch videos, you’re in luck. Today Google has announced a number of new features and improvements making their way to Chrome that will help you save more data, download things for offline viewing, and discover even more personalized content tailored to your interests.
Chrome’s Data Saver feature has been around for awhile, and it’s quite the handy feature if you’ve never tried it out. With Data Saver turned on, Chrome will compress images and text you load, saving up to 60% of your data without changing the content. Now Chrome’s Data Saver is getting video support, allowing you to save up to 67% of your data when viewing MP4 videos through Chrome. Google says in India alone, this new feature is saving 138TB of data on video in a single week. Not bad!
Data Saver will now also optimize HTTP websites to their essentials, which should help web pages load much faster than before.

Google Chrome is also getting a new download feature, which will allow you to simply tap a download button to save a web page, photo or video for offline viewing. You can access the downloads hub by tapping the overflow menu (three dots) on the top-right of your browser. Google also says you don’t need to worry about restarting your download if your connection is dropped, either. If you go offline when Chrome is downloading something, it will immediately start back up once you’re back online.
The new downloads feature is now available in Chrome Beta and will roll out to the stable version of Chrome soon.

Google is also making it easier to find topics that you’re interested in. Now when you open a new tab in Chrome, you’ll see suggestions for websites you might want to visit. Plus, the more you use Chrome, the smarter these suggestions will get overtime.
These changes will be making their way to Chrome soon, so grab the latest version at the Play Store link below to try them out.
